Objectives Enabling a World Leader in Innovation SGL Carbon is a technology-based global leader in the development and manufacture of carbon-based solutions. Headquartered in Germany and operating 29 sites, the company serves customers in some 80 countries.
SGL Carbon is a highly technology-focused company, supplying specialty graphite, carbon fibers and composite products for world-leading operators in multiple innovation-led sectors. Key markets range from climate-friendly mobility, semiconductor technology and LED to solar and wind energy, and lithium-ion batteries.
The global IT service at SGL Carbon is responsible for ensuring a smooth, reliable and efficient environment for its nearly 4,700 workers. Whether employees are working at home, in the office or on the move, the department is responsible for meeting diverse and individual computing needs across Europe, North America and Asia.
“It’s our job to support end users to work efficiently and effectively. They need an environment that allows them to work efficiently from anywhere,” says Winfried Schwarz, VP, Head of IT Infrastructure at SGL Carbon. “That includes enabling people who are working from home.”
It’s a comprehensive responsibility that covers computer devices, servers, infrastructure and software. Ensuring an enhanced and efficient employee experience can be a complex process. SGL Carbon looked for a solution that would simplify and optimize access to devices and software, reduce time demands on IT staff and reduce overall infrastructure costs. It was important for the business to control the environment and provide a solution that would deliver an excellent end-user experience across a widely diverse employee base.

Approach Shaping the Future The HP Early Adopter Program provided a unique opportunity for SGL Carbon. As the first HP Adaptive Endpoint Management customer in Europe, the customer adopted the HP solution to meet its main objective of keeping people productive with an out-of-the-box solution that eliminates red tape.
“It’s great to be the first, because you can adapt specifics to your primary goals,” says Gerhard Boening, SGL Leader of Global Workplace. “You can shape the service as you need it.”
SGL Carbon also realized that streamlining its vendor base would be an important step forward in simplifying processes, and that a single vendor HP solution would provide an efficient, end-to-end service. Following an initial workshop to define a roadmap and execution schedule, SGL Carbon completed the first phase of the roll-out in Germany, before moving on to the rest of Europe and eventually deploying the program worldwide.
“It all started with an HP workshop where we defined a roadmap of what we needed in terms of software, hardware and infrastructure and an execution plan,” says Boening. “We worked with HP to establish the necessary levels and how we could work together.”
HP acts as a service provider, delivering, managing and securing HP Windows devices that are supplied directly to end users, who simply turn the devices on, connect to the internet and complete the provisioning process online. Windows Autopilot simplifies the device set-up for users and IT.2
The HP service brings the entire endpoint management process into the cloud, including incorporating approximately 100 device policies with additional settings. New or reinstalled devices are now automatically registered with SGL Carbon as soon as they go online, without an IT expert having to be present. Existing devices are also added to the environment if support is needed, at which time, the existing system images can be updated via the cloud.
“It’s much easier, for example, when users have a single process rather than having different vendors for second- or third-level support,” Schwarz adds.
Day-to-day device management and software provisioning are fully handled remotely, with employees simply choosing the applications they require and accessing them within minutes of receiving approval. The HP Adaptive Endpoint Management environment also supports devices running other operating systems, such as Android and IOS phones and tablets.
“HP is supporting us to provide very modern, state-of- the-art devices and services to meet the needs of our end users. It’s very easy and very, very efficient.” Gerhard Boening Leader of Global Workplace, SGL Carbon

Business Outcomes The Right Solution at the Right Place at the Right Time The introduction of HP Adaptive Endpoint Management has resulted in a simplified environment for both the IT staff and the entire workforce at SGL Carbon. HP provides a streamlined, single-vendor, end-to-end solution so SGL Carbon devices are now supplied with corporate-ready imaging rather than every employee making a visit to IT for device set up. With 100% of the addressable computing base covered, the time taken to get new users up, running and productive has been cut from up to four hours to just 30 minutes.
“We can provide and provision devices anywhere in the world; we just need an open internet connection,” says Boening. “It’s much faster than in the past. The full standard provisioning package is already there.”
The provisioning, however, is just the start. The SGL Carbon workforce can now access what they need when they need it, while HP support delivers an aligned ticketing system. The implementation of HP Proactive Insights, currently in its early stages, will also help inform IT manager efforts to optimize the device refresh cycle, meaning new devices can be built using a lean, agile approach based on device telemetry, such as history, performance and compliance. Devices are then refreshed based on performance, not age, to ensure a high- quality user experience in a consistent and secure environment.
“HP is supporting us to provide very modern, state-of-the-art devices and services to our end users,” says Boening. “It’s very easy and very, very efficient.”
From an IT management perspective, moving onsite workloads and app distribution to the cloud brings a streamlined infrastructure and significantly improved levels of efficiency. Always-on security helps reduce endpoint security risk, while unified endpoint management from HP adds compliance into a seamless, cloud-based service. HP Workforce Solutions delivers speed, efficiency and transparency in the service and support process, with most service requests resolved though first-level support.
“Moving from our old processes to this new, stable modern management environment is the right step,” says Schwarz. “Users can access what they need, where and when they need it.”
